STOCKPORT STOCK TRANSFER

That this House notes with alarm the way Stockport Council is running its stock transfer campaign; further notes that the council is now so desperate to get a yes vote it is refusing to provide local honourable Members with a list of tenants eligible to vote, that it is using housing officers to canvass for a yes vote, with a bonus of ??400 for every 300 contacts and that it instructs those canvassers to mislead tenants by implying there will be no rent increases and that all will get new bathrooms and kitchens and that tenants will get a bigger say in how their properties are managed; and deeply regrets that it is proceeding with the scheme in spite of there being major anomalies in the offer document.

leave out from 'notes' to end and add: 'with interest the way Stockport Council is implementing the Labour Government's policy of stock transfer in close partnership with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, and overseen by the Independent Tenants Advisory Service; commends the Council for its long-standing attempts to secure loan sanction from successive governments that would have allowed it to improve its housing stock and avoid the necessity for stock transfer, for its scrupulous adherence to the procedures and legislation governing tenants' ballots, including The Data Protection Act, and for its repeated public declarations that it is a matter for tenants to decide what is in their best interests.'.
