Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Pete Wishart (Scottish National Party), on Wednesday, 26 February 2003, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 6 members in total.

UPGRADING A9 TO DUAL CARRIAGEWAY

That this House supports the campaign to have the A9 between Perth and Inverness upgraded to dual carriageway; despairs at the dangerous design of the road that varies awkwardly between dual carriageway and single file traffic; notes that the A9 is the main arterial route through the Scottish Highlands and is frequently used by foreign tourists as well as honourable Members who often visit this beautiful part of the United Kingdom; notes that visitors often have difficulty in understanding the layout of the road and are often distracted by the scenery of this area; and calls on the Scottish Executive to dual the whole of the A9 and instal grade-separated junctions in order to make this dangerous road safe.

Amendments

The Early day motion has received 2 amendments.

787A1
leave out from 'House' to end and add 'notes that the provision of dual carriageway along the entire length of the A9 between Perth and Inverness would lead to a substantial increase in traffic, and thus road accidents, along the entire length of that road and many of its feeder routes; further notes that such dualling of the A9 would be likely to result in existing traffic congestion on the A9 simply being replicated on roads to the north of Inverness; believes that the best way of reducing accidents on the A9 would be by imposing lower speed limits on all non-dual carriageway sections of the road combined with extended provision of fixed and mobile speed cameras along with the requisite policing resources; and further believes that the many hundreds of millions of pounds that would be required to upgrade the entire length of the A9 from Perth to Inverness would be better directed to upgrading the rail infrastructure and rail services between Inverness and the south, and also to the north of Inverness.'.
