Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Simon Thomas (Plaid Cymru), on Tuesday, 22 June 2004, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 5 members in total.
MCDONALD'S AND FOOTBALL IN WALES
That this House notes that on 28th April, McDonald's posted a 56 per cent, rise in first quarter profits, representing an earned income of $511 million; notes that these profits have just been swelled by an additional ??20,000 from the National Assembly Government under its Sportsmatch Cymru awards; is appalled that a company responsible for unhealthy food is being rewarded by taxpayers' money for its use of football training in primary schools to promote its own name and products; further notes the emphasis of both the National Assembly and United Kingdom governments on tackling obesity in children does not believe that a game of football outweighs the damage of salty, fatty, fast foods; and urges the Sports Council for Wales and the National Assembly Government to withdraw its offer of subsidising McDonald's attempts to ingratiate itself with schools, children and parents.
