Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Michael Fallon (Conservative), on Wednesday, 30 June 2004, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 42 members in total.
EXAMINATION OF CLASSICS
That this House deplores the decision of the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA), the largest examination board, to drop Latin and Greek as an examined subject after 2006; regrets that this decision was taken without consulting schools, university classics departments or even its own subject advisory panel; notes that this will further narrow subject choice at GCSE and A-level; is concerned that this will leave the future of classics in the hands of a single examining body, OCR, and will thus especially disadvantage those state schools that prefer the AQA syllabus to that of OCR; and calls upon the AQA to reconsider.
