That this House deplores the proposal to end the broadcasting of live concerts on Radio Three outside the Prom season; believes that live concerts are an essential part of the BBC's musical remit; is concerned that ending the broadcasting of live music will reduce the choice of classical music available to listeners and could reduce the number of such concerts, especially in the regions; believes that it might also reduce the BBC's commissioning of new music and jeopardise the future of its orchestras and singers; reminds the BBC that its broadcasting policy should not be the plaything of particular controllers; strongly urges that its management undertake a proper consultation with its listeners and the classical music community before any final decisions are taken; and calls upon the BBC's governors to take this final opportunity before they make way for the trustees to make a stand against yet another example of the dumbing down of the BBC's cultural programming.

That this House notes that the recent report of the House of Lords Select Committee on Economic Affairs (HL 176) is entitled, Monetary and Fiscal Policy, and lists 'the conduct of fiscal policy' as one of the main issues considered by the Committee; believes that it is inappropriate for the unelected House to report on fiscal policy when it has no responsibility for raising revenue or allocating expenditure; and asks Members of the House of Lords and its committees to respect the conventions that exist between the two Houses.

That this House deplores the decision of the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA), the largest examination board, to drop Latin and Greek as an examined subject after 2006; regrets that this decision was taken without consulting schools, university classics departments or even its own subject advisory panel; notes that this will further narrow subject choice at GCSE and A-level; is concerned that this will leave the future of classics in the hands of a single examining body, OCR, and will thus especially disadvantage those state schools that prefer the AQA syllabus to that of OCR; and calls upon the AQA to reconsider.

That this House congratulates Conservative-controlled Kent County Council on its efficient financial management and for its continuous and evolutionary approach to the Government's agenda for modernising local government; notes that the statement by the honourable Member for Gravesham of 10th May, Official Report, column 837, that the Council is already overspent by ??10 million in the current year, has been completely refuted by the Council's Chief Executive as inaccurate and incredible; and further notes that the County Solicitor has formally challenged the honourable Member to substantiate or withdraw his further allegation, made under parliamentary privilege, that the Council has acted unlawfully in respect of the Access to Information Act 1985.

That this House congratulates Newham Local Education Authority, along with its teachers, parents and children, on being one of a small number of authorities inspected so far which successfully challenge the assumption that poverty and ethnic diversity must necessarily lead to failure at school; notes that the LEA and its schools offer a service which is improving year by year, with every expectation of further improvement in the future; and applauds this success brought about by the determination of the Council not to tolerate failure, the dynamic and imaginative professional leadership of the LEA, the steady rise in the education budget and the careful targeting of that increase on the changing priorities in education.
