Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Stephen Pound (Labour), on Tuesday, 11 May 2004, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 4 members in total.
FUTURE OF CROMWELL GREEN
That this House notes that the construction of a visitor facility on Cromwell Green will involve the removal of the statue of Oliver Cromwell, known to many as the Butcher of Drogheda; while welcoming this development, would not like to see the statue relocated to anywhere other than a foundry; considers that public consultation should commence in order that a new name for the area be agreed; and notes that Charles Stuart and Prince Rupert of the Rhine have already been mentioned in this context.

- 1172A1
- leave out from 'as' to end and add "God's Englishman"; whilst recognising the historic record of his brutality in Ireland, also acknowledges his vital contribution to the Parliamentary cause against a tyranny of absolute monarchy intended by the failed monarch Charles I and to the development of the British constitutional settlement; believes that the hostility of Charles Stuart and Prince Rupert towards democracy do not deserve recognition within the Parliamentary estate; and calls on the House authorities to find a location of equal or even greater prominence for Oliver Cromwell's statue, perhaps including the vacant plinth in Member's lobby, and not give in to historical revisionism to the detriment of this great figure from Britain's past.'.

- leave out from 'Cromwell' to end.
- 1172A5
- Line 2, leave out from 'Cromwell' to end.
