Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Lord Mann (Labour), on Wednesday, 10 December 2003, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 5 members in total.
RECLASSIFICATION OF AMPHETAMINE-TYPE STIMULANTS
That this House notes that a recent report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimates that there are 34 million users of amphetamines (methamphetamine and amphetamine) worldwide; is concerned that they are perceived as less harmful than other illicit substances like heroin and cocaine; is concerned that frequent use can lead to strain on the cardiovascular system, depressive disorders and 'amphetamine psychosis'; is alarmed that 2.2 per cent. of people in the UK use amphetamine-type stimulants, putting the UK in the top three globally for misuse of these drugs; and calls upon the Home Office to recommend to the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs that amphetamine-type stimulants be reclassified from a class B to a class A substance.
