Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Lord Martin of Springburn (Labour), on Wednesday, 6 March 1991, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 34 members in total.

B.R.E.L. REDUNDANCIES

That this House views with grave concern the decision of B.R.E.L. to declare 1,200 of its workforce redundant, in spite of the fact that when this Company took over from British Rail, it promised an increased workload, based on potential overseas orders and alternative engineering work; notes that this work has not materialised; and urges the Government to invest in a railway system which would bring Britain's rail transport system up to the standards of Germany, France and Italy.

B.R.E.L. REDUNDANCIES (571A1)
The Early day motion has received an amendment sponsored by Gwyneth Dunwoody (primary, Labour) and tabled on Thursday, 7 March 1991. It has been signed by 14 members in total.
at end add 'further notes that at the same time as B.R.E.L. is proposing to pay lower redundancy to employees of many years' standing, it has allowed a new director to purchase shares worth ??1 million for ??90,000; and wonders if B.R.E.L. intend to perpetuate the policy of last in greatest gains, first in greatest losses.'.
