Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Alan Amos (Conservative), on Tuesday, 12 March 1991, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 20 members in total.

BRITISH PREGNANCY ADVISORY SERVICE AND VIRGIN BIRTHS

That this House is appalled at the provision of artificial insemination for virgin women, especially by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, Britain's largest private abortion agency; believes it shows the utmost hypocrisy for this organisation artificially to provide children for unsuitable women, while at the same time, and in the same clinics destroying human life through abortion; feels that the involvement of BPAS in abortion shows that it can never put the best interests of any child first; believes that this process reduces women to the role of breeding cattle, and children to the status of commodities to be bought and sold; and further believes that virgin births have enormous implications for social policy with the state being expected to foot the bill to bring these children up; also believes that such practice is incompatible with the basic tenets of Christianity; and urgently calls on the Government to end this abhorrent, immoral, and unnatural practice immediately.

BRITISH PREGNANCY ADVISORY SERVICE AND VIRGIN BIRTHS (594A1)
The Early day motion has received an amendment sponsored by Harry Cohen (primary, Labour) and tabled on Thursday, 21 March 1991. It has been signed by 3 members in total.
leave out from 'House' to end and add 'congratulates the British Pregnancy Advisory Service on the important and helpful work it undertakes for women and families; notes with astonishment that those opposing artificial insemination for single women for proclaimed religious reasons do not appear to appreciate the qualitative difference between the virgin birth in the year 0 and those proposed by the BPAS in that artificial insemination was not available in the year 0; and believes that the principal issue is that of individual choice or state interference and prohibition.'.
