MINK AND FOX FACTORY FARMS

That this House notes the existence in Britain of 31 mink factory farms and two Arctic fox factory farms; endorses the view of the Government's welfare advisory body, the Farm Animal Welfare Council, which disapproves of mink and fox factory farming as the systems involved do not satisfy some of the most basic criteria for protecting the welfare of farm animals; believes that the rearing on factory farms of mink and fox, and their subsequent killing by lethal injection or gassing, merely in order to satisfy a whim of fashion, are morally obnoxious to large numbers of the British public; recognises that this view is shared by many leading zoologists and animal welfare behaviour experts; and urges Her Majesty's Government to legislate for the phasing-out of Britain's mink and fox fur factory farms without delay, and to call upon other member states of the European Community to do likewise.
