GATESHEAD MBC'S ROYAL TOWN PLANNING INSTITUTE AWARD

That this House congratulates Gateshead M.B.C. on gaining the Royal Town Planning Institute Award for planning achievement in 1990 in recognition of the excellence and innovation of their public arts programme which is an essential part of the borough's strategy to revitalise an area which lost its main employment base in mining and heavy engineering; and recognises that the design and construction of the art works has generated wide interest and support from the public and private sector and has created training opportunities which have led to full time employment.
