Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Nigel Griffiths (Labour), on Wednesday, 5 February 1992, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 49 members in total.
SCOTTISH HISTORY DEPARTMENT, EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY
That this House notes with dismay the decision of the University of Edinburgh to freeze the chair of Scottish history; notes that the chair of Russian is frozen until 1995 and the department reduced to two full-time members; regrets that currently 30 out of 100 established professorial chairs are vacant at Edinburgh, including astronomy, bacteriology (medical microbiology), conservative dentistry, crop production, English and African literature, molecular parasitology, natural philosophy, oral surgery, orthopaedic surgery, Russian, Scottish history, statistics, and tropical animal health; deplores the fact that Edinburgh University shares with all other universities severe financial hardship as a result of government policies; and calls on the Government to ensure that the university has the necessary funding to fill professorial chairs and fulfil its role as a leading centre of learning.
