BIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

That this House welcomes Birmingham International Airport's plans to attract transatlantic services between Birmingham and the United States of America; notes the overwhelming call by West Midlands business sector to provide such services; further notes that the economic regeneration of the area will be substantially enhanced if scheduled transatlantic services existed; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Transport to allow United States airline operators to provide such services, since British airlines already have such rights but are choosing not to exercise them at the present time.

at end add 'further, it demands that the Secretary of State for Transport takes immediate action to allow such scheduled transatlantic services to start from Birmingham International Airport without further delay, so that these services can help to regenerate the Midland Region which has suffered the full brunt of Her Majesty's Government's policies, which have destroyed so much of the manufacturing base of the country.'.

at end add 'as quickly as possible providing that (1) the sound-proofing and double glazing scheme is further extended to maximum height above the present Birmingham airspace limit, to at least 50 miles around and be merged with the present Birmingham airspace, to maximise the already excellent safety record, (3) a suitable westerly oriented holding space be created, (4) there is an up-grading as soon as possible with any airlines concerned in operating planes having a substantial number of economy and apex seats, to allow more travel for both businessmen and tourists between the U.S. and Birmingham International, the most strategically placed airport of both Britain and Europe, (5) this new gateway airport's position as the new Gateway is incorporated in a New Bermuda 3 Treaty to be negotiated and concluded as soon as possible with the United States of America and allowing as a reciprocal slot, if required , the same facility to either an airport near New York, Washington DC, New Jersey, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cincinatti International, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas or other Florida hubs.'.
