Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Lord Steel of Aikwood, on Monday, 25 October 1993, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 12 members in total.

CANADIAN LIBERAL VICTORY

That this House congratulates Jean Chretien and the Canadian Liberal Party on their resounding victory in the general election; wishes them well in their twin objectives of restoring their economy through the application of sound Keynesian principles, and developing the federal structure of Canada; notes that following the good wishes from the British Prime Minister to the ruling Canadian Conservative parties they were reduced to two seats in the Commons; and hopes this is a foretaste of things to come.

Amendments

The Early day motion has received 2 amendments.

2523A1
leave out 'and hopes this is a foretaste of things to come' and add 'observes that 16.1 per cent. of the voting electorate achieved this derisory representation under the ludicrous "first past the post" electoral system; and hopes that the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom will achieve similar results from that system'.
2523A2
at end add 'and notes that the Canadian Tories held 17 per cent. of the popular vote but ended up with just 0.68 per cent. of the seats in the new Parliament; and wonders if it might be wise for the Government to reflect on the case for electoral reform before it is too late.'.
