Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Alice Mahon (Labour), on Wednesday, 19 May 1993, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 35 members in total.
MENWITH HILL STATION AND TELEPHONE TAPPING
That this House notes that Alan Clark the former Defence Minister claims that Ministers' phones are routinely bugged; also notes repeated accusations of bugging of prominent persons' phone calls; notes that parliamentary questions about the top secret telephone tapping Menwith Hill Station in Yorkshire have not been given substantive Answers by Ministers; further notes that the ever expanding Menwith Hill Station in Yorkshire now has 22 Radomes for monitoring satellite (telephone) communications and employs 1,760 personnel including members from all four United States Armed Services and from British GCHQ and is managed by a clandestine US organization, the National Security Agency, whose retiring Director recently described his organization as a 'magical institution' involved in a 'global enterprise' with 'core business areas'; and calls on the Government to allow a suitably constituted inspection team to be allowed to monitor Menwith Hill Station's activity and to provide more information in parliamentary questions on phone tapping.
