DEATHS FROM CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

That this House is deeply concerned over the number of deaths each year from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gas appliances that have not been properly installed or serviced in private rented accommodation, in particular, houses in multiple occupancy; is aware that many landlords do not know or are unconcerned about the statutory obligations they have under existing legislation; commends the actions of Liverpool and Cardiff City Councils in developing the practice of certification of landlords of houses in multiple occupation; urges the Government to amend legislation to impose upon landlords a specific requirement to maintain and regularly service gas appliances fitted within their properties; calls upon the Government and British Gas to ensure that the public, particularly students, are aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, and congratulates Anne Watkinson and other members of the Campaign for Carbon Monoxide Awareness in their efforts to end these unnecessary deaths.
