Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor David Shaw (Conservative), on Tuesday, 30 June 1992, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 89 members in total.

DOLPHINS AND TUNA FISHING

That this House notes that dolphins are endangered by certain methods of catching tuna; is appalled that seven million dolphins have been unnecessarily killed over the last 30 years in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) alone as a result of the deliberate setting of purse-seine nets round dolphins in order to catch the tuna swimming below; notes that tuna caught on dolphins in the ETP accounts for only 5 per cent. of the world's tuna supply; notes that approximately half of all tuna caught on dolphins in 1990 was imported into Europe; welcomes the European Parliament's adoption of the report by David Morris MEP which calls for a ban on the import into the EC of all tuna caught on dolphins; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to press the EC Commission to introduce legislation to ban the import into the EC of all tuna caught by dolphin-endangering methods and to prohibit the use of such methods in EC waters and by EC nations.
