MINK AND FOX FARMING

That this House endorses the statement of the Government's own Farm Animal Welfare Council that `the systems employed in the farming of mink and fox do not satisfy some of the most basic criteria for protecting the welfare of farm animals'; supports the view of leading zoologists and veterinary experts that such farming, where mink and fox suffer all the typical reactions of wild creatures in a restricted and deprived environment, is cruel and barbaric; notes that Mink (Keeping) Orders have signally failed to prevent mink escaping from such farms in the past, posing a threat to native wildlife and domestic animals; and strongly urges the Minister of Agriculture to make a new Order prohibiting from 1st January 1993 the keeping of mink in fur factory farms, and take similar action for foxes.
