NATIONAL AUDIT OFFICE REPORT ON THE MERSEYSIDE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

That this House applauds the National Audit Office report on the mismanagement of the Grand Regatta Columbus and the Fanfare for a New World Concert by the Merseyside Development Corporation; demands that the full claims of creditors who were contracted for this event, with the approval of the Merseyside Development Corporation, be met; deplores the use by the Department of the Environment of the 1968 Treasury Undertaking convention, as amended in 1990, to censor comment; notes that, unlike elected councillors, appointees to quangos like the Merseyside Development Corporation are not personally liable for such waste and maladministration; and therefore calls for the dismissal of the Chairman and Chief Executive of that organisation.
