COMIC RELIEF POLICY ON GRANT DISTRIBUTION

That this House regrets the decision of the charity Comic Relief to refuse funding to Newcastle Jellicoe sea cadets on the grounds that they were not a minority group or an unpopular cause; notes the statement by Comic Relief that `We are particularly keen to fund projects which benefit black and minority ethnic people, women, lesbians and gay men'; believes that many people who have raised money for Comic Relief will have been unaware of this policy and will be concerned about the effect of its implementation; further notes that the application from Newcastle Jellicoe headquarters keeps 75 youngsters off the streets in an area which has one of the worst unemployment and crime rates in the North-East; recognises that a grant would have helped stop the closure of their vandal-hit headquarters; believes that such allocations should be made on the basis of need alone; acknowledges that Comic Relief has an exceptional record of raising monies; does not wish to see this record damaged; and to this end calls upon Comic Relief to review its decision to Newcastle Jellicoe in particular and its overall policy in general.
