Question: To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, if he will exempt the student bursary for nurses and midwives from tax; and if he will make a statement; if he will estimate the cost of exempting the student bursary for nurses and midwives from tax.

Answer: Mr. Burstow: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) if he will exempt the student bursary for nurses and midwives from tax; and if he will make a statement; [222139] (2) if he will estimate the cost of exempting the student bursary for nurses and midwives from tax. [222141] Dawn Primarolo: Students nurses and midwives who receive support through the NHS Bursary Scheme are exempt from tax and from national insurance deductions on the bursary, which is treated as a student grant and not classed as salary or wage.
