Written question asked by Lord Strathclyde (Conservative), in the House of Lords. It was answered by Lord Triesman (Labour) on Thursday, 3 November 2005.
British Consulate, Istanbul
- Question
- Whether it is their intention that the church and churchyard of St Helena’s at the British Consulate in Istanbul should ever be reopened for worship after its destruction by al-Qaeda bombing; if so, when; and, if not, why it should not be reopened.
- Answer
-
I refer to the reply I gave the noble Lord on 24 October (Official Report, col. WA 149). It is too early to say when the chapel repairs will be completed. We will discuss subsequent reopening of the chapel, with the bishop of Gibraltar in Europe and the Church Council in Istanbul.
