Misuse of Drugs Advisory Committee

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many scientists who have conducted research into the association between drug misuse and mental illness (a) serve and (b) have served since 1997 on the Advisory Committee on the Misuse of Drugs.

Answer: Under the terms of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, the membership of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs must include representatives of the practices of medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy, the pharmaceutical industry and chemistry other than the pharmaceutical industry and people who have a wide range of experience of social problems connected with the misuse of drugs.There are four present members and six past members (who were members since 1997, including two members that retired from the Advisory Council at the end of 2005) who have conducted research into drug misuse and mental illness. The Advisory Council's committees and working groups also include co-opted members, some of whom have also conducted research in this area.
