Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will make a statement on the role of supervisors of midwives.

Answer: The role of supervisors of midwives is one of public protection ensuring that the standard of midwifery practice in their locality is maintained, that midwives have the correct equipment and skills to perform their role and that the quality of their practice is monitored. In practice, the role is one of providing professional support for midwives in overcoming professional dilemmas and enabling them to perform their role in an environment conducive to positive outcomes.
