- To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs how much genetically modified maize was imported to the United Kingdom in (a) 2004 and (b) 2005.

The total volume of grain maize (combined figure for both GM and non-GM) imported to the United Kingdom in (a) 2004 and (b) 2005 was:
tonnes Volume 2004 1,257,921 2005 1,169,953 We do not keep records of the total of specifically GM imports, although since April 2004 exporters have been required under new EU legislation to keep for five years records of imports of GM crops. This data is not however collected centrally.GM maize can only be imported legally to the United Kingdom if the product has been approved under stringent EU legislation.
