Oral question asked in the House of Lords, by Lord Goodhart (Liberal Democrat). It was answered by Lord Falconer of Thoroton (Labour) on Monday, 15 May 2006.
Courts: Job Cuts
- Question
- Whether the proposed cuts of 1,000 jobs from the Courts Service and 300 from the Department for Constitutional Affairs can be achieved without damage to the administration of justice.
- Answer
-
My Lords, we are committed to protecting vital services to court users and providing value for money for the taxpayer. The anticipated reduction is for up to 1,000 posts in Her Majesty’s Courts Service and just over 300 in the rest of the Department for Constitutional Affairs, making a total of approximately 1,300 posts. The reductions result from a planned programme of efficiencies and business change, aimed at improving value for money while preserving services to court users.
