Prisons Finance

- To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer pursuant to the announcement by the Home Secretary on 21 July of 8,000 extra prison places, what funds his Department has allocated to the Home Office for provision of those places; and what estimate he has made of the cost of those places.

Home Office spending for 2008-11 was announced in Budget 2006. Funding for subsequent years has not yet been determined.For the estimated costs of the programme, I refer the hon. Member to the answer given by my right hon. Friend, the Home Secretary, on 4 September 2006, Official Report, column 1915W.
