To ask the Secretary of State for Health what proportion of the NHS workforce in England was represented by midwives in 2006, expressed in terms of (a) headcount and (b) whole-time equivalent.
Answer

The following table shows the proportion of the national health service work force in England represented by midwives as at September 2006 in terms of both headcount and full-time equivalent.
