Diseases: Thyroid Gland

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what representations he has received on the diagnosis and management of hypothyroidism.

Answer: Representations on the diagnosis and management of hypothyroidism have been recently received from a small number of health professionals and members of the public, and from members of parliament on behalf of their constituents.These representations have raised concerns over the over-reliance on blood tests in the diagnosis of hypothyroidism, and the possibility of under diagnosis of this condition.At present, it is considered good medical practice to confirm a diagnosis of hypothyroidism though physical examination, clinical history and blood tests.
