Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much was spent by his Department on newspapers and magazines in the last 12 months.

Answer: The Ministry of Defence holds a contract with a supplier to provide newspapers and copyrate magazines to units in the London area. This contract came into force on 1 March 2002. Expenditure under the contract for financial year 2006-07 was £65,324.MOD units outside London may purchase newspapers under local arrangements. Information on expenditure under such local arrangements is not held centrally and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
