Streptococcus: Pregnant Women

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if his Department will assess the latest evidence for testing pregnant women for group B streptococcus; and if he will make a statement.

Answer: The United Kingdom National Screening Committee (UK NSC) advises Ministers and the national health service in all four UK countries about all aspects of screening policy and supports implementation. Using research evidence, pilot programmes and economic evaluation, it assesses the evidence for programmes against a set of internationally recognised criteria.The UK NSC is considering the implications of the latest research as part of an ongoing programme of work to assess the evidence on the best way to reduce newborn group B streptococcus infections.
