Health: Screening
- Question
- (2) what resources his Department plans to make available to provide free health checkups to all people over the age of 40 years.
- Answer
-
The free check ups for those aged over 40, to which the hon. Member refers to, is the vascular checks programme. This will put in place an integrated, systematic population-wide vascular risk assessment and management programme for those between the ages of 40 and 74. The programme will assess people's risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease. Each person will be given individually tailored advice and support to help them reduce or manage that risk. The total annual cost at full implementation (including interventions to manage the risk of vascular disease) has been estimated to be in the region of £332 million in the Department's economic modelling. The costs associated with the vascular checks programme are set out in the impact assessment which has been placed in the Library.
