Terrorism: India

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether she has had discussions with her Indian counterpart on the implications of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai for the national security of the UK and India.

Answer: I have not had any direct discussions with my Indian counterpart since the horrific attacks in Mumbai. However, discussions on the terrorist attacks in Mumbai were the focal point of the Prime Minister's visit to India on 13-14 December. During the course of that visit the Prime Minister offered to the Indian Government any help with the investigations that we can give, and discussed with them how we can work more closely together to tackle terrorism and its causes. As part of this the Prime Minister agreed a programme of work with India including work to improve aviation security, and work to improve the security of major sporting events such as the Commonwealth games in New Delhi in 2010, and the Olympic games in London in 2012.
