Written question asked by Elliot Morley (Labour) on Wednesday, 29 April 2009, in the House of Commons. It was due for an answer on Tuesday, 5 May 2009. It was answered by Huw Irranca-Davies (Labour) on Thursday, 7 May 2009 on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Elephants: Conservation

Question
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what recent reports he has received of elephant poaching in Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) signatory countries in contravention of CITES.
Answer

I am aware of continuing concerns about elephant poaching and the recent ivory seizure in Vietnam. The UK has helped fund both the Elephant Trade Information System (ETIS) and the Monitoring of Illegal Killing of Elephants (MIKE) programmes under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). We expect to receive an update on illegal elephant trade at the next Conference of CITES Parties in 2010.
