Kosovo: Unemployment

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what recent estimate he has made of levels of unemployment in Kosovo; and if he will make a statement.

Answer: The Statistical Office of Kosovo (SOK) lists the 2005 total unemployment rate as 41.4 per cent., with 83.7 per cent. of those considered to be long-term unemployed. The unemployment rate for women is 60.5 per cent. However, Kosovo's statistical systems remain in an early stage of development and therefore data are subject to a high degree of uncertainty. The Department for International Development (DFID) has supported the Statistics Office of Kosovo to develop a National Statistics Development Strategy which is now being implemented.
