Merlin Helicopters: Training

- To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many service personnel have taken part in Exercise Merlin Vortex.

Exercise Merlin Vortex was a pre-deployment training exercise to prepare the Merlin force for deployment to Afghanistan. 422 service personnel took part in the exercise, comprising 177 aircrew and 245 ground support staff. In addition, the exercise was supported by two civilian doctors.The deployment of the Merlin force to Afghanistan began in November and will be complete by the end of 2009.
