- To ask the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families how many (a) physics, (b) chemistry, (c) mathematics, (d) English, (e) biology and (f) history teachers who entered the profession in a state school in 2005 were still teaching in state schools in the last year for which figures are available.

Full and part-time¹ teachers in local authority maintained sector service² who qualified in 2004, entered service in 2005 and were still in service in 2008, by subject of initial teacher training qualification, Coverage: England Subject Remained in service 2008³ (percentage) Physics 76 Chemistry 74 Mathematics 77 English 80 Biology 76 History 81 ¹ Teachers in part-time service are under-recorded on the DTR by between 10 and 20 per cent. and therefore these figures may be slightly underestimated. ² The local authority maintained sector includes teachers in maintained nursery, primary, secondary, special schools and pupil referral units and excludes CTCs and academies. ³ Figures are provisional estimates and are subject to change. Note: Those in service in 2007-08 will not all have been in continuous service between 2005 and 2008; some may have left and returned during the period.
