Royal Mail: Stoke on Trent

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills whether he has made an assessment of the likely effects on Stoke-on-Trent Royal Mail centre of the proposed consolidation of service provision within Royal Mail.

Answer: The provision of postal services in the Stoke-on-Trent area is an operational matter for Royal Mail. The company is taking forward a business transformation plan, agreed with the CWU, which will see a restructuring of its mail centres and other operational changes. Royal Mail has to improve its efficiency so that it can secure its future in a market where letters volumes continue to decline. Its half year results, which reported a £66 million loss in the letters' business, emphasised the need for change.I have asked the chief executive at Royal Mail to write to you and provide an update on any operational changes in the Stoke-on-Trent area and a copy will be placed in the House Libraries.
