Written question asked by Lord Fearn (Liberal Democrat), in the House of Lords. It was answered by Baroness Neville-Jones (Conservative) on Thursday, 20 January 2011.

Police: Youth Groups

Question
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what criteria are applied by the police when deciding whether to approve leaders and helpers for youth groups.
Answer

Persons working regularly with children and young people in either a paid or volunteer capacity are normally required to undertake a criminal records check conducted by the Criminal Records Bureau. It is normally a matter for employers, or organisations using volunteers, to decide when to obtain such checks. A police force organising youth activities would be entitled to obtain checks on volunteers working in this area.
