Natural Gas: Exploration

Question
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change if he will ask the Committee on Climate Change to examine the potential effects of the extraction of shale gas and coal bed methane in the UK (a) on achieving the UK's energy policy objectives and (b) on the development of renewable energy.
Answer

In the UK shale gas has not yet been commercially proven and coalbed methane has not yet been commercially proven on a large scale. Analysis of the potential effects of extraction on UK energy policy objectives and development of renewable energy would in the circumstances be subject to large uncertainties. There are no plans to ask the Committee on Climate Change to carry out such an examination.
