Tobacco: Prices

Question
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what recent assessment his Department has made of the effect on demand for cigarettes of trends in the price of cigarettes.
Answer

HM Revenue and Customs estimates that a 1% increase in prices results in a 1.05% decrease in consumption of duty paid cigarettes. These results are published in the following technical paper:"http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/research/cig-consumption-uk.pdf"
