Animals: Quarantine
- Question
- To ask Her Majesty’s Government what is their assessment of any proposals from the European Commission to lift restrictions on pet animals entering the United Kingdom.
- Answer
-
The UK's Pet Travel Scheme allows pet dogs, cats and ferrets from certain countries to enter the UK without quarantine, provided those animals meet the scheme rules which are in place to keep the UK free from rabies and certain other diseases. The UK currently has a derogation from the EU's harmonised pet travel scheme. To ensure that that UK controls remain effective we are considering how the scheme will operate in the longer term and are in discussions with the European Commission.
