Injunctions: Mass Media

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he has had discussions with the Secretary of State for Justice on the effects of super-injunctions made under English law on the freedom of the press in Scotland.

Answer: The Attorney-General confirmed in answer to an urgent question in the House on 23 May 2011, Official Report, columns 633-644, that the Prime Minister would be asking for a Joint Committee of both Houses to be established to consider the current law in relation to privacy and the use of anonymity injunctions and super-injunctions. The Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, the right hon. and learned Member for Rushcliffe (Mr Clarke) and the Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, the right hon. Member for South West Surrey (Mr Hunt), are in the process of liaising with the Chairs of the Committees with an interest in this area and with the House Authorities regarding the terms of reference, membership and timetable for the new Joint Committee.
