Public Records: Colonial Documents

Question: To ask Her Majesty’s Government what criteria they use to determine whether documents relating to individuals involved in independence movements in the United Kingdom’s former colonies are released to the National Archives.

Answer: Section 2 of the Lord Chancellor’s code of practice on the management of records issued under Section 46 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 sets out the criteria for release of information to the National Archives. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office takes decisions on which documents should be disclosed on that basis.
