Written question asked by Lord Laird (Ulster Unionist Party), in the House of Lords. It was answered by Lord Howell of Guildford (Conservative) on Monday, 5 September 2011.

Abdul Baset Al Megrahi

Question
To ask Her Majesty’s Government, further to Written Answer by Lord Howell of Guildford on 21 June (WA 265), when East Renfrewshire Council was last advised of Abdul Baset Ali Al Megrahi's medical state and whereabouts; whether, in the light of the ending of diplomatic recognition ofthe Gaddafi regime and Mr Al Megrahi's recent appearance at a Tripoli rally, they will now ask the council for sight of the most recent information it has received on Mr Al Megrahi; what is their current view of the original medical evidence on his condition, and what discussions they have had with the Scottish Administration on the matter.
Answer

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) does not monitor the location or health of Abdul Baset Ali Al Megrahi. This is a matter for the Scottish Government through East Renfrewshire Council, as the supervising local authority. We understand that the council is maintaining regular contact with Al Megrahi as required by the conditions of his release licence. Any change in the situation in the light of fast changing internal conditions in Libya will be carefully examined.
