Pensions

Question
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what recent estimate he has made of the annual cost to the public purse of the tax-free lump sum for pension payments; what assumptions he has made in reaching this estimate; how many such lump sums were paid in the most recent year for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement;
Answer

There are no estimates for the cost of the tax-free lump sum for pension payments, nor an estimate of the potential revenue yield by capping it. There is no requirement on pension schemes to report to HM Revenue and Customs the amount or number of tax-free lump sum pension payments.
