Iran: Politics and Government

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent meetings his Department has had with the Government of Iran; and what was discussed.

Answer: I summoned the Iranian Charge d'affaires on 30 November 2011 to express outrage at the invasion of our embassy compounds in Tehran and to notify him that all Iranian diplomats were to be expelled from the UK and the Iranian embassy closed. Since then there has been only one meeting between the Iranian Representative to the International Maritime Organisation in London and officials of the FCO's Protocol Directorate to discuss administrative arrangements for the closed Iranian embassy.We have not severed diplomatic relations with Iran and will maintain a minimal dialogue over issues of concern such as Iran's nuclear programme and its human rights record.
