Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Health Services

Question
To ask the Secretary of State for Health how much has been spent on the treatment and care of those with myalgic encephalomyelitis in the last five years; and how much has been spent on research into the condition in that period.

Information on the expenditure for the treatment and healthcare of people with chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) is not collected centrally.Expenditure by the Department on research on CFS/ME through research programmes, research centres and units, and research training awards is shown in the following table.

Expenditure by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN) on research into CFS/ME cannot be disaggregated from total CRN expenditure.Prior to the establishment of the NIHR in April 2006, the main part of the Department's total health research expenditure was devolved to and managed by national health service organisations. From April 2006 to March 2009, transitional research funding was allocated to these organisations at reducing levels. The organisations have accounted for their use of the allocations they have received from the Department in an annual research and development report. The reports identify total, aggregated expenditure on some disease areas, but do not provide details of spend on research on CFS/ME.
