Question: If he will comment on the advice given to individuals liable to military service who have sworn allegiance to the Crown but whose domicile subsequently becomes independent of the United Kingdom.

Answer: Mr. Barry Field: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the advice given to individuals liable to military service who have sworn allegiance to the Crown but whose domicile subsequently becomes independent of the United Kingdom.[36921] Mr. Soames: Since the UK does not have conscription into the armed forces, on the basis that all those joining the services do so voluntarily, the question of liability for military service arises only for those members of the reserve forces with a residual call-out liability. No advice is provided to reservists whose domicile subsequently becomes independent of the UK.
