Mr. McCabe: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will list local education authorities in order of performance in terms of (a) percentage points of improvement between 1996 and 1997 based on pupils' achievement at level 4 and above in Key Stage 2 curriculum tests in English, mathematics and science (i) separately and (ii) taken together, and (b) their actual average scores at Level 4 and above in each of those subjects in each year. [18579] Ms Estelle Morris: The national figures for pupils at level 4 show improvement between 1996 and 1997 as follows: _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Percentage point improvement from 1996 in: Teacher assessment Test English 3 5 Mathematics 4 8 Science 4 7 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. The 1996 Key Stage 2 results by local education authority (LEA) area were published in March 1997 and copies placed in the Library. Each LEA will be publishing the 1997 Key Stage 2 results for schools in its area in January 1998. The Government plan to publish 1997 Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 results for each LEA early next year.
